Is Omaha in Nebraska good place for life?

Omaha is the largest city in the state of Nebraska, United States, and is the county seat of Douglas County. Estimate population is 450,000 (state Nebraska 1,880,000) and it is 41st biggest city in US. Median age in Nebraska is 36.3, 54.9% o population is married and unemployed rate is 3.3%. Median home price is 126,600 USD. Omaha’s rate of violent crimes per 100,000 residents has been lower than the average rates of three dozen United States cities of similar size. So much for statistics (source here)and now set the main question: are people here really happy?

Omaha has a high concentration of wealthy inhabitants. For example former world’s richest man Warren Buffett. All right maybe not the best example, but this corner of world is definitly not poor.

Omaha’s hip downtown scene is full of interesting shops, trendy bars, urban lofts, restaurants and a decidedly big-city feeling. This is definitely the place to be for a night on the town. Runza, Nebraska fast food chain is everywhere and has been enjoyed by presidents and celebrities alike. The signature sandwich is a mixture of ground beef and cabbage encased in bread.

Omaha is on list of the top music cities in the United States, great brewries, beer festival, fine food and Husker football is the state religion. Omahans claim they got the best ZOO in US. The Henry Doorly Zoo boasts the largest geodesic dome in the nation, as well as the largest indoor rainforest.

Omaha has decent options for entertainment. The Centurylink Center (formerly Qwest Center) gets most of the big name concerts. There are a lot of casinos right across the river in Council Bluffs.

Housing in Omaha is very affordable. 200K to 300K will buy you a nice home in a good neighborhood. Omaha real estate research is easy and fast, there is huge amount of decent companies. Parking is cheap and close. Security lines are never long. Since Omaha is in the middle of the country, it also means you won’t have long flying times to get any where. On paper, Omaha looks like a pretty great place to live: It’s consistently rated one of the most affordable cities in the country.
